A replacement for the Hydra

Dear friends,

Bawon Samdi's idea to scratch-build the Winged Ape from the crossover set of Mythic Battles, made me itchy to create even more mini substitutes myself. The first that came to mind was the Hydra, which was advertised together with the Winged Ape. So, I made one.

  

 

Maybe it's not as terrifying as the original, but it will do the work :)

What I used for the project was an old Allosaurus miniature from Safari ltd. Strangely enough, the only image of this mini I could find, was this one

 

 

Anyway, I cut it's head and back legs off, cut the palms of the front legs and turned them 90^ο so that they are "stepping" on the ground, and "shaved" the belly so it can stand better.. 

Then, I cut the heads of four (five was too much for me to handle) heads from brachiosauruses I got from cheap toy sets (I think they're called "Dinosaur World" or something), and attached them where the old head used to be (I had to drill holes to both the heads and the body, so I can use pins to secure the heads - just glueing them was not enough).

The result was this

        

 

 

As you can see, I "shaved" the heads, as they resembled duck heads...

I then used epoxy putty to hide the heads - body joints, made back legs and a tail again from epoxy putty.

I made a back fin from carton, and a "nose job" to each head, you guessed it, with epoxy putty.

Attached the whole thing to a round carton base, painted it, and voila.

 

   

 

It's easier than it sounds, but you'll really need some tools to cut off the heads and feet. my trusty Dremel did the trick.

I would i have probably started with a four legged dino but i'm really surprised how well it looks with this allosaurus once the rear legs are cut.

 

Do you think that it would have been possible to bend the necks (with a combo hot/cold water maybe ?) in order to give them different orientations ?

The base seems a bit too large for most boards. Maybe you should cut it to give it an elliptic shape. Do you plan to fully base the mini with flock/grass/plants ?

The base indeed is a bit too big. I think I'll make a smaller one. But no flock etc, I never do this to miniatures (I don't know why, but I don't...)
