Conan franchise is returning to Marvel

I think it could be great news! Dark Horse did some amazing work through the years, but starting with their abysmal and ill-conceived ‘Queen of the Black Coast’ series the main Conan title has been quite weak. That doesn’t include the Truman/Giorello King Conan mini-series, which were all stellar. ‘Avenger’ had better writing than Woods’ terrible QofTBC, but had some of the worst Conan art ever committed to paper. ‘Slayer’ has been a step in the right direction, but I think that Conan in comic book form really needs a refresh. I’m hopeful that Marvel is going to do it justice. As long as it isn’t a watered-down, politically correct, PG-rated effort, it could be great!

I feel bad for Dark Horse in a way. Losing Star Wars and now Conan doesn’t leave them with many A+ titles.

I absolutely agree with @Epaka on this, although I think the decline began a little earlier (with the road of kings).

Agreed, although I think the chances of this happening are either slim or non-existent. With my luck, they will have Conan magically teleported to modern day or something.

Haha! Marvel already did that with Conan a couple times... Remember the ‘What If?...’ series? Conan even battled Wolverine in one of those!

As for Marvel staying true to REH, only time will tell us that. I saw comments below the announcement article linked to in the OP wherein some people were hoping that the new Conan comics would remove the ‘toxic masculinity’ from the character... WTF?!

With regards to when the DH Conan comic began its decline? I reluctantly agree with you. I’m such a huge fan of Roy Thomas that it’s nigh impossible for me to disparage his work, but Road of Kind was ultimately a disappointment. It wasn’t terrible writing, and the pencil work was actually pretty nice (I think the cartoony ink and color work ruined it).  RoK was actually very much like Roy’s work from his Marvel Conan days. A solid, pulpy adventure without overly heavy thematics. However, compared with what Dark Horse had built up by that point, it felt rather lightweight. Combine that with art that simply wasn’t as grim, powerful, and captivating as what came before it - and it absolutely broke the continuity. I don’t think it broke the series though - I lay that squarely at the feet of Brian Woods and his puerile ‘adaptation’ of Queen of the Black Coast’. Conan was still Conan in Thomas’ work - but by trying to force weepy notions of post-renaissance romantic love into the relationship between Conan and Belit Woods demonstrated an absolute disregard for the source material and proved that he didn’t understand Conan, Belit, nor the Hyborian age. Conan and Belit take a stroll through the Pictish wilderness to visit Cimmeria so that Conan can introduce Belit to his mother?!?!?!!! Seriously?! The artwork was generally subpar, with Conan transformed into a skinny goth teenager. They spend almost no time on the water being, you know, PIRATES. Conan despairs and weeps for himself... The list of insipid ideas and insults to REH goes on and on. How could the series recover?

As someone who owns a copy of every single English language Conan comic in existence (although I haven’t yet nabbed the current Conan/Wonder Woman crossover) I will almost certainly be purchasing the new Marvel issues, I just hope they are worth reading and not just disappointing fodder for my collection...
