Suggestions for Mythic Battles Ragnarok

Recommended Posts

MBR confirmed! That is great news! Lets talk about preffered new units and ideas! I start with a copy of a post I made at the good place forum (since this will be our new good place I guess :) )

"I would love to see better representation for woman in the MBR-game. I absolutely love MBP but I think better representation would make the game even better and more accesible. Since we are making suggestions, I will try to make a couple of suggestions for kick ass female models. Everyone can feel free to chip in and help, the more suggestions, the better! Smile As for the design, they can be nude, thats fine, at least as nude as their male counterparts, but make their poses threatening, not like Pin up-models. Make them look like warriors! No combat high heels or boob-plates, but just fierce fighters. If you absoltely have to make some Paolo-stuff, include it in a special "Paolo-box"as an add on,  with regular models for the females as well.

Goddesses
Freya (Godess of almost everything, she is kind of lika a mix of Athena, Afrodite and some mage-god? She is an equal warrior-god to Odin, and gets half of the fallen warriors when Odin gets the other half, she is a fertility godess and the shaman who teaches Odin the power of the runes. Seriously so badass and the best of the gods by far! Smile ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freyja

Skuld (Hero, not to be confused with the Norn of the same name) a half-elven princess who raised an army of criminals and monsters to take over the throne of her half-brother Hrolfr Kraki, using necromancy to resurrect any fallen soldiers before she personally saw to Kraki's end. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skuld_(princess)

1. Make it compatible with MBP.                   2. Mounts, simply put an option to mount specific gods. Either with alternate skulpts or a mechanic to represent that the god or hero is mounted. With abilities that match. For example ride of the calories or the wild hunt. Which become available when the god/hero is mounted.                                    3. More historical characters along side mythological ones. This makes sense from a setting perspective.

4. Omphalus obsorbtion that unlocks abilities. Dont get me wrong I like that omphalus can either be used as an art of war or to heal damage. However what would be cool is if by absorbing an omphalus you are able to unlock more abilities. Thus representing your god regaining more of his divinity. Also in regards to this topic probably have them called something different the Apples of Idunn maybe as these were the source of the gods power in the myths.                    4. Make it Ragnarok!!! The twilight of the gods!!! By which I mean more aggressive gameplay and more ways to win. So maybe some kind of mechanic where you could win a game by dying gloriously!!! As a suggestion maybe if your god dies instead of losing outright your troops carry on to the last.

We have this in the divinity cards, right?

Regarding Ragnarok:
The one thing I want most is a Bifrost map. :icon12: And, of course: Ymir's Corpse map.

I'd expect a good number of non-human troops.

What about things like Yggdrasil and Naglfar? Would those be divinities, or maybe something like "neutral" units that you put in play for certain scenarios?

Heroes: I was wondering about that - Greek heroes are so much better known that most Norse heroes in general; but JohanBerg has cool examples indeed up there.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will look at it carefully. A member of this forum, Ur Shulgi is working for us about MBR. He is a huge fan of nordic mythology and he is preparing some documents about that.

My biggest suggestion is making it 100% compatible with Pantheon, both gameplay and lore wise.

For sure it will be 100% compatible. We are working on the explanation of how both universes can meet them together. If there was an apocalypse fior the greec gods, what about the nordic ones? Greec gods loose their immortality but nordic gods were not immortal.

First thing first: +1 for more woman. Great job Johan for compiling this list!

I do hope that with this part of MB we will get more overall picture of the world after apocalypse. While I'm not that excited about Vikings (they are kind of overused in games recently) I still hope that next instalment in MB series will be about Egypt or Asian gods. And for that there is need for bigger picture of what happened. MB:R is good place to start it all up in my oppinion.

Agree on it being nice with mounted troops. A lot of the famous imagesof the aesir is of them mounted, like Odin on his eight footed horse sleipnir, Thor on hos wagon drawn by goats or Freya on hear drawn by (Probably ferocious!) cats.

Yggdrasil is a tree, so would be a map I guess? And Naglfar could perhaps be a super-boat for the water-maps? :)

Conversion rules to a full Wargame. Same models now a way to bring it to a tabletop. Generic enough to be reused with MBP and future systems. This could be a living rulebook and your existing items would lend itself well.

Personally I find this completely unnecessary.

Right now, MB are perfectly working skirmish game on board, with interactive terrain and interesting and tight mechanic. Moving this to tabletop will bring nothing interesting to the game. On the contrary, it may make it more cumbersome and slow.

To transfer MB to tabletop you would need to add at least:

  • Measuring/pre-measuring distances to move/shoot/charge/engage etc. - All that right now is taken care of by spaces on board. It's more elegant, quicker and easier that way
  • LOS Rules, LOS checks etc. - LOS is tricky to do even in board game (e.g. Conan), not to mention tabletop game. Here, again, spaces take care of this
  • Unit cohesion - What  if only part of the unit can reach forest? Or part of the unit is in water? Then either whole unit takes penalty or you treat models case-by-case and slow down the game

And there is more: Units may behave completely different, so they probably should be rebalanced - would you pay for additional cards/dashboards with new stats for a game with limited availability? Since I mentioned limited availability - that is also an issue. Someone who got two sets may have advantage over another player because it allows him to field bigger units, or two units of the same type. Can you even take more than one unit of same kind? Can both players take same heroes? How do you balance around all that? It is a lot of work that ultimately may be just dead end.

Original Mythic Battles, and then Mythic Battles Pantheon were design to make Wargame experience as tight and enjoyable as possible, and it works perfectly. As a wargamer I can't see anything that wargame may improve in this system. If there will be fan rules - why not, but official rules seem really unnecessary.

Biggest thing for me is that it was fully compatible with MB:P, as others have already mentioned, seeing Odin punch Zeus in a battle will be priceless. I'm not very well informed about norse mythology ( outside of the obvious gods ), so MB:R will be a learning experience for me to expand my knowledge, as well as an opportunity to get a kick-ass game :biggrin:.

It would be nice if it was a more concise edition than MBP. I love MBP but bloody hell it takes up SO MUCH room on the shelves. Maybe an all-in of half the size and cost would be a much more manageable project with room to grow in another Norse based Kickstarter or other mythologies if the demand is there.

I love the fact that Monolith decided to cap Batman around $300. I think it’s a great move for keeping things manageable.

You can squeeze Base Pledge, Hera, Poseidon and all smaller expansions except Manticore in Hera and Poseidon box, it is quite barbaric for miniatures but they fit. However I agree that it would be nice if the game was more squeezed.

Assuming that MB:R will be KS Exclusive, it would be nice, if it was planned around storage. I wouldn't mind not getting boxes for separate expansions if it would mean that whole game neatly fits in 2-3 boxes.

The list of female examples is a great start to finding what is needed.

I am also hoping that Wikipedia is not a major source. Lol

I am very glad to see that the Ragnarok and Pantheon games will crossover! However, given that the first game was about creating a new Pantheon, it seems that Ragnarok has potential to be a completely independent story with very different motivations for why the gods are doing what they are doing. I agree about the apples replacing omphalos. Seems logical.

Mounted units! Yes! I think this could bring potential for many variations of not only heroes and God's but troops!

I disagree with the idea of a full scale war game. This system works fantastic as is!

I don't have the time to play those extremely long games anymore and MBP fills my miniature game needs!

I don’t want to see holding back when it comes to art and sculpting. Nordic and Greek Mythology had adult content yes, when it comes to violence and even some nudity. There’s too much worry about offending people. So for certain units and artwork, have alternate versions we can choose from during pledge manager.

And of course neoprene maps! Would love to have that option for not only this but also Pantheon! Keep up the great work and can’t wait!

I see your point of view, and I agree that art/sculpting that should not be limited (unless it is funded by government - so basically everyone's - money, but that separate debate for other topic).

However I do feel that your proposition is not feasible. Alternate miniatures still need to be sculpted, alternate illustrations need to be painted, molds need to be made etc. That costs money, and, while during KS people who want alternate versions/less nudity are very vocal and persistent, they tend to be minority of backers, so it simply may be too expensive to do.

Basically what I'm saying is: Don't count on alternate versions and don't have high hopes for them, but ultimately it is Monolith that has all the data and it is Monolith that will make final decision.

That being said, Vikings have less nudity than Greeks (because of cold in the north probably ), and current sculpts follow this trend.

Personally I would welcome and hope for miniatures similar to Serpent Clan from Blood Rage, but it seems like Monolith is going for more realistic depiction of Vikings. But after Conan and Mythic Battles Campaign, and seeing Batman previews I do feel that Monolith is really, really good at grasping heart and soul of source material, even if it is not really popular decision in mainstream (vide Conan nudity issues). So I believe that they whatever they will do I will like it, and I hope that they will keep this attitude during their next campaigns (specially Conan ).

I have no problem with nudity per se, but despise the pin up look. Make all females AND males (not only females) as nude or dressed as is deemed apropriate, but skip the high heels and boob armour, and make everyone look like the warriors they are supposed to look like. If people talk about "this is how vikings/greeks looked like (even though the game obviously takes artistic liberties either way) there is no point making pin ups. No viking or greek warriors, male or female wore high heels or stood in silly "sexy" poses when a fight was inbound. :P

I have another idea, for a map this time!

A frozen lake. The map is of the lake itself, and then you would have cardboard ice floe(?) that you put on the spaces of the lake. The ice would work lika normal ground, but it can break (maybe if you attack it, make an area attack or whatever) making the warriors on the ice to fall in tha lake below. Perhaps you can have sea monsters swim from below, and break the ice? Lots of cool stuff and would be very thematic and cineastic. 😄
